10 Tips for Healthy Eyes in a Digital World

When we’re focused too long on our screens, our eyes suffer. Here’s how to help.

Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) or Digital Eye Strain (DES) is a modern problem. Solving it is not quite as simple as just blinking more.

How Does a Computer Cause Dry Eyes?

When using screens, your eyes are constantly refocusing to see the pixels (tiny dots) that make up type and images. We tend not to blink as much, drying out our eyes.

Underlying conditions—nearsighted or farsightedness, astigmatism, blood sugar or blood pressure issues, even some medications—can worsen eye strain.

What Can You Do About It?

  1. Use the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away from your screen, for 20 seconds. Apps like 20-20-20 Eye Protector and Eye Care 20 20 20 can help.

  2. Consider blue light glasses. For some people, blue light filters and anti-reflective coatings help. Also, having prescription glasses ensures your vision is supported with the right corrective lens.

  3. Place your monitor properly. Put your screen about 20 to 28 inches away and slightly down (4-5 inches) from your eye level.

  4. Adjust lighting to avoid glare. Drape windows and avoid strong overhead lighting.

  5. Turn down screen brightness. Dark or night mode settings may help.

  6. Increase font sizes. Use 12+ point when possible. Or view at 125% or 150% sizes.

  7. Reduce screen flicker. Increase the screen refresh rate (over 75 hz) in your display settings.

  8. Use a large screen with good resolution.

  9. Stay hydrated. Blinking needs moisture to bathe eyes.

  10. Get vision insurance It helps you stay on track for exams and eyeglass updates!

In most cases, rest from screens allows eye strain to go away. But if symptoms persist, it’s time to see an eye doctor.

How Do Vision Plans Work?

Vision insurance is like health insurance in that most plans will have copays, coinsurance and deductibles. Depending on coverage, costs are typically $5 to $30 a month. Vision insurance will reimburse you for eye exams, glasses and contacts, and other vision care needs. Most plans offer discounts on corrective surgeries like LASIK and PRK.

The real value in vision insurance is helping keep regular care affordable. And that helps not only with issues like digital eye strain but also in catching major eye issues early to protect your sight — such as diabetes retinopathy or glaucoma.
